Double Storey Rear Extension Using Reclaimed Bricks Nearing Completion

We’re back onsite at Clough Lane today to check in on one of our ongoing projects in Manchester. In our last update, the strip foundations had just been poured and the outline of the extension was beginning to take shape.

The double storey rear extension is now fully weathertight — a big milestone that means internal works can officially begin.

Designing with Reclaimed Brick

A key aspect of this project is the use of reclaimed red bricks to match the original house. This was a conscious decision early in the design process, aimed at giving the new extension a natural connection to the existing building. Even at this stage, the aged and varied brickwork brings a sense of warmth and character that helps the new structure feel embedded in its setting.
Reclaimed materials carry a visual richness and authenticity that can’t easily be replicated with new products. The approach also allowed us to maintain a consistent architectural language across the whole home — especially important for period properties and homes with strong material identity.

Why Choose Reclaimed Bricks?

There are multiple reasons we recommend reclaimed bricks for projects like this:

- Environmental benefits: Reusing bricks keeps materials in circulation and reduces the need for new manufacturing and transport, lowering the project’s carbon footprint.

- Planning and heritage considerations: In areas with strict planning guidance, reclaimed bricks are often preferred for their ability to blend with surrounding properties.

- Aesthetic character: Every reclaimed brick carries subtle differences in tone, shape, and surface, giving the façade texture and depth that new bricks often lack.

That said, reclaimed brickwork does come with a few considerations. It can take time to source enough bricks from a consistent batch, and some additional labour is often needed for cleaning and preparation. For this project, we worked closely with our supplier to ensure we had a good match early on, avoiding delays and maintaining build quality.

Where Can I Source Reclaimed Bricks?

Our client Harrison noted that the process of acquiring the bricks was as simple as going to a local builders’ merchant and having a discussion.

Manchester, being historically a mill town, has an abundance of reclaimed stock available. While larger national suppliers such as Ibstock can help with sourcing, it is often advisable to look local first, where batches are more plentiful and costs may be more competitive.

What's the Cost of Reclaimed Bricks vs New Bricks?

Pricing can vary depending on quality, size, and availability, but here are some typical figures (as of 2025):

- New machine-made bricks - around £650 per 1,000

- Facing bricks (higher finish) - typically £950 to £2,200 per 1,000

- Standard reclaimed bricks - often £850 - £1,100 per 1,000

- Premium or heritage reclaimed bricks - up to £1,500+ per 1,000, depending on quality and rarity

On a per-brick basis, reclaimed stock bricks are usually priced between £0.85 and £2.50 each, while certain handmade or imperial-sized bricks can cost £1.50+ each.

Although reclaimed bricks are usually more expensive than new, the investment can be worthwhile for matching period properties, meeting planning requirements, and achieving a characterful finish that modern bricks can’t fully replicate.

Are Reclaimed Bricks Right for Your Project?

Not every project requires reclaimed bricks, and for many new builds they may be unnecessary. However, for extensions, conservation projects, and homes with strong architectural character, reclaimed bricks can make a significant difference to the overall look and feel.

What’s Next?

Now that the structure is sealed and the main form is established, the next phase will focus on the internal fit-out, services, and finishes.

It’s been a rewarding stage of the build to reach, and it’s exciting to see how the early design decisions - especially the material choices - are already defining the finished home.

We’ll be sharing further updates as the interiors progress and the full vision comes together.
